Plot Summary

Tiny World Season 2 is a macro nature documentary sequel that premiered simultaneously worldwide on Apple TV+ on April 16, 2021. Co-directed by Tom Hugh-Jones and Nathan Small, the series runs for 6 episodes (each approximately 30 minutes long) and continues to feature Paul Rudd as narrator. Produced by Plimsoll Productions, this season retains the macro cinematography approach from Season 1 while upgrading the technology: it adds high-speed macro photography (up to 2,000fps), thermal imaging, microscopic endoscope lenses, and 4K HDR shooting. The production team spent 2 years, spanned 6 continents across the globe, deployed over 40 cinematographers plus more than 200 post-production and CGI artists, filmed over 200 species of tiny creatures, and accumulated 3,160 hours of total shooting time. It was Apple TV+’s largest-investment nature documentary project of 2021. This season adds new micro-ecological coverage of biodiversity hotspots including Japan, Madagascar, the Galápagos Islands, Patagonia, Borneo, and the African savanna. Iconic moments include: a miniature chameleon hatchling breaking out of its shell in Madagascar, the pitfall trap mechanism of a Bornean pitcher plant, micro marine communities in the Galápagos, a dwarf mongoose family in Tanzania, and the breeding rituals of poison dart frogs in the Amazon rainforest—dozens of rare behaviors captured in all. The score is composed by Tom Mayall. The season debuted at #1 on Apple TV+’s global TOP 10, with cumulative household viewership exceeding 14 million over 4 consecutive weeks. It holds an IMDb rating of 9.1 (as of 2024) and a Douban rating of 9.6 (based on 2,843 reviews, as of 2024). Continuing the series’ signature blend of “childlike wonder plus scientific rigor,” it was named by The Guardian as the best family documentary of 2021, and stands as the visual ceiling for nature documentaries suitable for all ages.
