Skyscraper Live: Free Solo of Taipei 101 is a globally live-streamed extreme sports documentary event released by Netflix worldwide on January 23, 2026. It is directed and produced by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi—the same duo behind Free Solo. The film documents world-class free climber Alex Honnold completing a fully unprotected solo ascent of the Taipei 101 skyscraper (508 meters, 91 stories) in 101 minutes. This marks the first time in human history that anyone has attempted to free solo Taipei 101 with no ropes and no safety gear, and it is Alex’s second urban-scale “free solo” following his legendary 2017 climb of El Capitan in Yosemite. The challenge passes through several iconic structural features of Taipei 101, including the 36th-floor tuned mass damper observatory, the 89th-floor indoor observatory, and the world’s largest exposed tuned mass damper—all key technical waypoints. The production team consists of more than 30 cinematographers, with over 50 camera positions rigged on the building’s exterior, interior stairwells, helicopters, and ground level, achieving a seamless, no-blind-spot follow shot from base to spire for the first time. In addition to the climb itself, the film captures Alex’s months of preparation in Taipei, his exchanges with local extreme sports athletes, the coordination with Taipei 101’s building management team, and the behind-the-scenes work behind Netflix’s global live broadcast. The livestream reached more than 190 countries and regions across North America, Europe, and Asia, peaking at over 4 million concurrent viewers. The event represents Netflix’s first documentary delivered in a “Live” format, and the latest milestone in Alex Honnold’s free solo series.
