Synopsis
Prehistoric Planet Season 1 is a prehistoric natural documentary that premiered globally on Apple TV+ on May 23, 2022. Executive produced by Jon Favreau and directed by Tim Walker, the series consists of 5 episodes (45 minutes each), narrated by David Attenborough. The series was co-produced by BBC Studios Natural History Unit (NHU) and MPC (Moving Picture Company, a top Hollywood VFX studio known for The Lion King and The Mandalorian), serving as Apple TV+’s flagship natural documentary project. The production team invited over 30 international paleontologists (including top dinosaur researchers such as Darren Naish and Nizar Ibrahim) to serve as scientific consultants, took 3 years to produce, and employed more than 150 CGI artists to recreate the Late Cretaceous ecosystems (75 million years ago) inhabited by dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. The 5 episodes focus on different habitats: “Coasts” (Coastal), “Deserts” (Desert), “Freshwater” (Freshwater), “Ice Worlds” (Frozen Worlds), and “Forests” (Forest). The series features over 70 prehistoric species, including audience-familiar dinosaurs such as T-Rex, Triceratops, Pterosaurs, Mosasaurs, and Plesiosaurs, as well as many species never before scientifically reconstructed in documentaries (such as Mongolia’s Deinocheirus and North America’s Quetzalcoatlus). The score was composed with Hans Zimmer producing the theme music, co-created by Anže Rozman and Kara Talve. The series debuted at the top of Apple TV+’s global TOP 10, accumulating over 15 million viewing households across 4 consecutive weeks, with an IMDb rating of 8.7 (as of 2024) and a Douban rating of 9.1 (based on 35,000 ratings). The series has been named one of 2022’s best natural documentaries by The Guardian, The New York Times, and National Geographic. It represents the visual pinnacle of dinosaur-themed documentaries and stands as one of the most talked-about documentaries on Apple TV+ since Ted Lasso.

A visually stunning dinosaur documentary at its absolute best. The Coelophysis scene made me cry—when the baby T-Rex gets ambushed by a crocodile on the shore, the score kicked in and completely broke me.

BBC NHU meets Hollywood VFX. The Velociraptor hunting Azhdarchid scene is the most thrilling sequence I’ve seen in any nature doc.
