Synopsis
Blue Planet II is the sequel to the BBC’s landmark ocean nature documentary series, premiering on October 29, 2017. Directed by James Honeyborne and narrated by David Attenborough, the series spans 7 episodes at approximately 50 minutes each. The tagline “Take a Deep Breath” has become an iconic slogan in nature documentary history. The production team spent four years filming across 39 countries with over 125 cinematographers, accumulating more than 6,000 hours of underwater footage. Equipped with 4K ultra-HD cameras, deep-sea manned submersibles, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), towed deep-sea camera systems, high-speed underwater macro lenses, and a revolutionary “deep-sea low-light photography” system, the crew captured previously unseen behaviors of over 1,000 marine species. The seven episodes are titled: “One Ocean,” “The Deep,” “Coral Reefs,” “Open Ocean,” “Green Seas,” “Coasts,” and “Our Blue Planet.” Several scenes have become iconic moments in nature documentary history: a tuskfish using a coral as an anvil to crack open clam shells (shared thousands of times worldwide), giant trevally cooperatively hunting sardine “bait balls,” a gulper eel filmed in the faint light of the 2,000-meter deep sea, a male fiddler crab waving its oversized claw in courtship, and a humpback whale mother shielding her calf from orca attacks in shallow waters. The score was composed by Hans Zimmer, Radiohead guitarist Jonny Greenwood, and Dave Stewart, among others (with the theme “Bleeding Sun”). Episode 4 features Radiohead’s reworked track “Bloom.” The series won the 2018 Emmy Award for Best Documentary Series, the 2018 BAFTA for Best Single Documentary/Factual Episode, and the 2018 Royal Television Society Award, and holds an IMDb rating of 9.3 (the highest of any nature documentary released between 2017 and 2024). Its UK premiere drew the highest ratings of 2017, with cumulative viewership of 125 million over 10 weeks. Widely regarded as the visual and narrative pinnacle of nature documentary filmmaking, Blue Planet II inspired subsequent works such as Netflix’s Our Planet (2019) and the documentary Deep Ocean (2020).

💬 Audience Reviews
The tuskfish using a coral as an anvil to crack a clam—unbelievable. State-of-the-art nature filmmaking.
— BBC Viewer ⭐10/10
I’ve rewatched the tuskfish segment at least 20 times. The Hans Zimmer + Radiohead soundtrack is absolutely god-tier. The ceiling of nature documentaries.
