Synopsis

Prehistoric Planet: Ice Age (commonly referred to as “Prehistoric Planet Season 3” in Chinese) is a 2025 prehistoric natural history documentary special released globally on Apple TV+. Co-directed by Tim Walker and Jack Bootle, with Jon Favreau returning as executive producer and David Attenborough serving as narrator, the series runs 4 episodes (45 minutes each). Produced jointly by BBC Studios Natural History Unit (NHU) and MPC, it is the third installment in the Prehistoric Planet franchise, extending the narrative timeline from the Late Cretaceous (75 million years ago) to the Pleistocene Ice Age (2 million – 10,000 years ago) and marking a new milestone in Apple TV+’s natural documentary lineup. The production team brought in over 40 paleontologists and climatologists as scientific consultants, adding reconstructions of prehistoric ecosystems across five continents during the Pleistocene (Eurasia, North America, South America, Africa, and Australia) and showcasing 60+ iconic Ice Age species including mammoths, saber-toothed cats, megalodons, giant ground sloths, glyptodonts, marsupial lions, and early humans (early Homo sapiens). The score is composed by Hans Zimmer, Anže Rozman, and Kara Talve. Continuing the franchise’s signature blend of photorealistic CGI and scientific rigor, the film brings Ice Age climate change, species migration, and the origins of humanity to global audiences in a visually stunning way, and has been named by The Guardian and The New York Times as one of the most anticipated natural documentaries of 2025. IMDb rating 8.6 (as of 2025), Douban rating 8.7. The film represents Apple TV+’s natural documentary lineup extending from the age of dinosaurs into the Ice Age, and stands as the latest must-watch title in David Attenborough’s natural documentary recommendations.

💬 Audience Reviews

From dinosaurs to the Ice Age, Attenborough is still that Attenborough. The mammoth episode is god-tier, and the confrontation between the saber-toothed cat and the giant ground sloth is textbook-level.

— Douban reviewer ⭐9/10

The transition from dinosaurs to megafauna works beautifully. Smilodon vs Megatherium fight is unforgettable.

— IMDb reviewer ⭐9/10
