Plot Summary
Free Solo is a 2018 National Geographic documentary co-directed by Jimmy Chin and Elizabeth Chai Vasarhelyi. The film captures the full story of world-class climber Alex Honnold’s “free solo” (unprotected) ascent of the 3,000-foot, nearly vertical El Capitan in Yosemite National Park on June 3, 2017—the first successful unprotected solo of the Freerider route in climbing history. The crew consisted of eight cinematographers (including Jimmy Chin) and director Elizabeth, who deployed multiple camera setups, ultra-telephoto lenses, and drones to document Alex’s years of physical training, mental preparation, romantic life (meeting his girlfriend Sanni McCandless), and the tension of the final day of the challenge. The film won the Best Documentary Feature award at the 91st Academy Awards in 2019, the BAFTA for Best Documentary in 2019, and was named one of the American Film Institute’s Top Ten Films of the Year. With an IMDb rating of 8.1, it is widely regarded as a milestone in extreme sports documentaries.

Watching Alex climb El Capitan had my heart in my throat the entire time. Eight camera positions and three years of follow coverage — this is the gold standard for extreme sports documentaries.
