Plot Summary

Prehistoric Planet Season 2 is the sequel to the prehistoric nature documentary series, which premiered globally on Apple TV+ on May 22, 2023. Co-directed by Tim Walker and Jack Bootle, with Jon Favreau continuing as executive producer and David Attenborough serving as narrator, the series runs for 5 episodes (45 minutes each). This season is co-produced by BBC Studios Natural History Unit (NHU) and MPC, retaining the first season’s CGI + real-world scientific consultant format while deepening its scientific exploration: it zeroes in on more complex themes such as the social behavior, group dynamics, and migration patterns of dinosaurs and other prehistoric creatures. The production team brought in over 40 international paleontologists and added new reconstructions of prehistoric ecosystems from Late Cretaceous North America, South America, and Asia. The 5 episodes focus on: “Islands”, “Badlands”, “Swamps”, “Oceans”, and “North America”. Iconic scenes this season include: giant sauropod herds in Argentine Patagonia, titanosaur migration across South America’s Patagonia, mother-and-calf T. rex interactions in Montana, North America, and a Spinosaurus vs. sawfish standoff on the North African coast—plus 70+ new scenes in total. The score is composed by Hans Zimmer, Anže Rozman, and Kara Talve. The season debuted at #1 on Apple TV+’s global TOP 10, with cumulative viewership across 4 consecutive weeks surpassing 18 million households. It holds an IMDb rating of 8.5 (as of 2024) and a Douban rating of 8.8. Continuing the first season’s ceiling-level visuals, the new focus on group living and social behavior makes the dinosaur world feel more three-dimensional—making it the most anticipated dinosaur documentary sequel of 2023.

💬 Audience Reviews

The second season’s addition of the ‘group behavior’ perspective takes the entire series’ three-dimensionality to a whole new level. The titanosaur migration sequence is absolutely breathtaking—the ceiling of CGI natural history documentaries.

— Douban User ⭐9/10

Spinosaurus vs Sawfish scene is the most cinematic predator fight ever put on screen. Pure cinema.
