Synopsis
Planet Earth II is a 2016 BBC nature documentary sequel, executive produced by Alastair Fothergill and narrated by David Attenborough. The series spans 6 episodes of approximately 50 minutes each. Over three years of production, a crew of 9 cinematographers filmed across 22 countries, marking the first time 4K Ultra HD and drone aerial cinematography were deployed on a large scale for a natural history series. The camera ventures into animal habitats previously out of reach: newly hatched marine iguanas on remote islands breaking through a swarm of racer snakes, macaques in urban India swiping tourists’ phones, cheetah brothers forming hunting alliances on the African plains, a snow leopard mother navigating treacherous cliffs with her cubs, flamingo dances on salt lakes, and golden eagles locked in mid-air combat high above the Alps. The score is composed by Hans Zimmer in collaboration with Jasha Klebe. The premiere set a record in the UK as BBC’s highest-rated natural history broadcast since 2010, and the series went on to win the 2017 Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary Series, with an IMDb rating of 9.4. Widely regarded as a dual high watermark in both technical achievement and storytelling for the nature documentary genre, it offers the most accessible viewing experience and the best image quality of any entry-level nature documentary.

💬 Audience Reviews
Even better than the original. Cities, jungles, and islands episodes are pure cinema. The drone shots of mountains are breathtaking.
— BBC viewer ⭐10/10
The Cities episode with the macaques stealing phones had me laughing out loud, while the snow leopard mother-and-cubs segment had me in tears. A new high for BBC natural documentaries.
