Synopsis

The Blue Planet is an ocean nature documentary first broadcast by the BBC on September 12, 2001, directed by Alastair Fothergill and narrated by David Attenborough. It consists of 8 episodes, each approximately 50 minutes long. Produced by the BBC Natural History Unit (NHU) over 5 years, spanning all 7 oceans of the world, and involving more than 200 cinematographers, this film is a panoramic record of marine ecology and is hailed as the first popular science work in the history of nature documentaries that truly adopts “the ocean as a community of life” perspective. The 8 episodes cover the following topics: “The Blue Planet” (overview), “The Deep”, “Open Ocean”, “Frozen Seas”, “Seasonal Seas”, “Coral Seas”, “Tidal Seas”, and “Coasts”. For the first time on a large scale, the film used deep-sea manned submersibles, remotely operated vehicles (ROVs), deep-sea cameras, high-speed underwater cameras, and macro lenses to capture footage that had never before appeared in a nature documentary: swarms of giant squid at 800 meters deep, bioluminescent microorganisms in 5,000-meter ocean trenches, whale fall ecosystems, Antarctic seal pods diving 600 meters under the ice, and the synchronized mass spawning of coral reefs. The score was composed by George Fenton. The series won multiple international awards, including the 2002 Emmy for Best Cinematography, a 2002 BAFTA nomination for Best Cinematography, and the PGA Award for Best Documentary. With an IMDb rating of 9.0, it is widely recognized as the template and source of inspiration for later ocean documentaries such as Blue Planet II (2017) and Our Planet (2019).

💬 Audience Reviews

Before Blue Planet, ocean documentaries felt like surface tours. This opened the deep for the first time.

The entry point that got me hooked on Blue Planet. The deep sea episode remains unforgettable — I never realized how many unknown creatures existed beneath the waves.
