Synopsis
Tiger King: Murder, Mayhem and Madness is an 8-episode true crime documentary miniseries released by Netflix on March 20, 2020. Co-directed by Eric Goode and Rebecca Chaiklin, the series explores the absurd world of private big cat (tiger, lion, leopard, etc.) ownership in the United States. The central figure is Joe Exotic (born Joseph Maldonado-Passage), former owner of the Greater Wynnewood Exotic Animal Park (GWP Zoo) in Oklahoma, a same-named country music artist, and a 2020 U.S. presidential candidate. Beginning in 2017, he was exposed for allegedly hiring a hitman to murder animal rights activist Carole Baskin (founder of Big Cat Rescue, whose ex-husband Don Lewis mysteriously disappeared in 1997). Side threads include the cult-like zoo operation run by “the Tiger King” Doc Antle (Bhagavan “Doc” Antle), the money-making scheme of Jeff and Lauren Lowe, and the controversy over Carole Baskin inheriting her ex-husband’s estate. The production team spent three years visiting eight U.S. states and interviewing more than 30 big cat owners, going undercover at zoos and auctions, documenting the living conditions of over 1,000 privately held large cats and exposing the inner workings of the industry. The series premiered during the global COVID-19 lockdown of 2020, instantly igniting a worldwide viewing frenzy. It topped the Netflix charts for consecutive weeks, surpassing 64 million household views within 10 weeks and becoming one of the most-watched documentaries in the platform’s history, spawning countless memes, podcasts, talk show segments, and music mashups. The series received a Best Limited Series nomination at the 2020 Critics’ Choice Television Awards and holds an IMDb rating of 7.6 (as of 2024), making it one of the most culturally influential documentaries of 2020.

💬 Audience Reviews
The cultural phenomenon of 2020. Joe Exotic became a meme overnight. Can’t look away even when it’s absurd.

Pure chaos. The story is wilder than fiction. Editing is messy but that adds to the madness.
