Synopsis

Planet Earth is a groundbreaking nature documentary aired by BBC in 2006, directed by Alastair Fothergill. It has 11 episodes, each approximately 50 minutes long. The series was the first to deploy HD cinematography on a large scale. The crew spent 4 years, traversed 62 countries, and mobilized 40 cinematographers to document the survival stories of over 130 species across seven major ecosystems on Earth—from polar ice fields to tropical rainforests, deep-sea hydrothermal vents to the heart of the desert. Iconic footage such as polar bears leading cubs across drifting ice, African elephant herds traversing drought, humpback whale pods hunting in the deep sea, and snow leopards leaping on Himalayan cliffs all originated from this production. The score was composed by George Fenton, with Hans Zimmer as theme producer, and narration by David Attenborough. The series won the 2007 Emmy Award for Best Documentary Series, holds an IMDb rating of 9.4, and is widely recognized as a milestone in nature documentaries and the template for later acclaimed works such as Blue Planet and Our Planet.

A landmark series. The first time HD was used at this scale for natural history, and Attenborough’s narration remains the gold standard.

My entry point into nature documentaries. Snow leopards, polar bears, humpback whales—every shot is meticulously crafted, and the music is perfect.
