Synopsis
Our Planet is a nature documentary series that premiered globally on Netflix on April 5, 2019. Co-directed by Keith Scholey and Alastair Fothergill, narrated by David Attenborough, and spanning 8 episodes at roughly 50 minutes each, the series was produced by Silverback Films in association with WWF (World Wide Fund for Nature). It stands as a trailblazer in Netflix’s nature documentary catalog and ranks among the most impactful nature documentaries of 2019 worldwide. The crew spent four years filming across more than 50 countries, deploying over 600 cinematographers—making it the largest-scale nature documentary production in Netflix’s history. The eight episodes each spotlight a different biome: Episode 1 “One Planet” (an overview), Episode 2 “Frozen Worlds,” Episode 3 “Jungles,” Episode 4 “Coastal Seas,” Episode 5 “From Pole to Pole,” Episode 6 “Fresh Water,” Episode 7 “Deserts and Grasslands,” and Episode 8 “Forests.” The series leverages cutting-edge techniques including 4K HDR capture, low-light cameras, drone chase sequences, long-range telephoto lenses, and underwater macro photography, delivering iconic shots of global biodiversity—polar bears struggling with cubs on melting pack ice, deep-sea whale pods cooperatively hunting krill, African elephant herds crossing arid grasslands, and previously unrecorded rare species deep within tropical rainforests. The score was produced by Steven Price with co-composition by Jasha Klebe. Narrator David Attenborough, at age 93 at the time, delivered his signature steady and resonant voice. The series debuted atop Netflix’s global Top 10, held the number-one spot in non-English-language markets for six consecutive weeks, and surpassed 125 million households in its first month—making it Netflix’s most-watched documentary of 2019. It holds an IMDb rating of 9.3 (as of 2024), a 96% Fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes, and earned a 2019 Emmy nomination for Best Documentary. Centered on the core message that “there is only one Earth,” the series delivers the contemporary themes of biodiversity and habitat conservation to global audiences through stunning visuals, inspiring subsequent Netflix releases such as Our Planet II, Night on Earth, and Life on Our Planet. A benchmark of 21st-century nature documentary filmmaking and an essential watch on any David Attenborough recommendation list.
