Synopsis
Our Planet II is the sequel to the acclaimed nature documentary series, released globally on Netflix on June 14, 2023. Co-directed by Keith Scholey and Alastair Fothergill, with narration by Sir David Attenborough, the series spans 4 episodes (split into 8 on some platforms), each running approximately 50 minutes. Produced by Silverback Films in association with WWF (World Wildlife Fund), it is the official follow-up to the 2019 original Our Planet, arriving four years later. The production took 4 years, spanned 6 continents, and mobilized over 150 cinematographers, making it the first Netflix nature documentary centered on the theme of “animal migration and life’s journeys”: the four episodes focus respectively on land migrations, ocean journeys, aerial flocks, and the habitats that humans have safeguarded for generations. Shot in 4K HDR with low-light cameras, drone pursuit footage, long-range telephoto lenses, and underwater macro photography, the series captures brand-new behavior from over 1,000 species — including 30+ migration sequences never before filmed for a natural history documentary: wildebeest herds braving the deadly Mara River crossing, humpback whale mothers and calves on an 8,000-km Pacific crossing, four generations of monarch butterflies接力 across North America, and Arctic terns completing the longest migration on Earth from the Arctic to the Antarctic. The score features a theme by Hans Zimmer, with original music composed by Jacob Shea and Sara Fowlds. Narrator David Attenborough, then 97 years old, remains as steady and powerful as ever. The series debuted at #1 on Netflix’s Global TOP 10, amassing over 65 million household views in its first 3 weeks, and holds an IMDb rating of 8.9 (as of 2024) with a 100% fresh score on Rotten Tomatoes. Continuing the original series’ mission of “telling the story of life on Earth through cinema,” Our Planet II is the first to weave biodiversity and habitat conservation together through the unifying thread of “journey.” It stands as one of the most talked-about nature documentaries of 2023 and an essential entry on any David Attenborough nature documentary watchlist.

💬 Audience Reviews
The migration theme is brilliant. Watching 4 generations of monarch butterflies cross a continent is jaw-dropping.

The four-generation monarch butterfly segment brought me to tears. It matches the original’s quality, and the new “migration” theme gives it a tighter pace.
