Synopsis

Beckham is a sports biography documentary mini-series that premiered on Netflix on October 4, 2023. Directed by Fisher Stevens and executive produced by John Battsek (producer of Free Solo and Earth: One Amazing Day), the series spans 4 episodes of approximately 50 minutes each. Drawing on over a dozen hours of exclusive interviews with David Beckham himself, alongside contributions from his wife Victoria Beckham, family members, friends, and former teammates (including Sir Alex Ferguson, Cristiano Ronaldo, Eric Cantona, Zinedine Zidane, and Wayne Rooney), and supported by nearly 30 years of British media footage, the film offers an in-depth portrait of one of the most beloved players in English football history. It traces his complete life journey: from his working-class childhood in Leytonstone in London’s East End, to the infamous red card against Argentina at the 1998 FIFA World Cup in France, the seismic 2003 transfer from Manchester United to Real Madrid and the media storm that followed, his meeting and love story with Victoria, his 2007 move to LA Galaxy, his 2013 retirement, and his post-football reinvention spanning fashion, philanthropy, and family life. The production team spent 3 years filming, deploying more than 30 cinematographers and traveling across the UK, Spain, Italy, the United States, Argentina, and Qatar to uncover previously unreleased family footage, training clips, and media interviews. Upon release, the series quickly topped Netflix’s Global TOP 10, accumulating over 120 million viewing households across 4 consecutive weeks, and holds an IMDb score of 7.8 (as of 2024). It was nominated for Best Limited Series at the 2024 Critics’ Choice Television Awards. David Beckham himself commented: “This is the first time I’ve truly sat down and told the whole story.” The series has been named one of the best sports documentaries of 2023 by The Guardian, The New York Times, and GQ.

💬 Audience Reviews

Becks finally tells his side. The 1998 red card chapter alone is worth watching.

— IMDb User ⭐8/10

Victoria and Beckham’s interviews were more candid than I expected. That segment on the ‘98 red card completely changed how I see David.
