Synopsis
The Last Dance is a 10-episode sports documentary miniseries co-produced by ESPN Films and Netflix in 2020, directed by Jason Hehir, with each episode running approximately 50 minutes. The series focuses on Michael Jordan and the Chicago Bulls’ “Last Dance” during the 1997-98 season — the final championship run of the Bulls dynasty. The director drew from more than 500 hours of previously unreleased behind-the-scenes footage, shot by the NBA’s official camera crew throughout the 1997-98 season, which remained locked away until it was authorized for release in 2020. Featuring in-depth interviews with Jordan himself, Scottie Pippen, Dennis Rodman, Phil Jackson, Steve Kerr, and other key figures, the series offers a comprehensive look at both the triumphs and tensions of the Bulls dynasty: Jordan’s “last shot,” Pippen’s contract dispute and the power struggle with Bulls management, Rodman’s off-court stories and personal redemption, and the iconic buzzer-beater in Game 6 of the 1998 Finals. Premiering on April 19, 2020 — right in the middle of global COVID-19 lockdowns — the series ignited a worldwide viewing phenomenon and dominated Netflix’s non-English charts for consecutive weeks. It holds a 9.1 rating on IMDb and won the 2020 Emmy Award for Outstanding Documentary Series. Widely regarded as a milestone in sports documentary filmmaking, it is a must-watch classic for basketball fans and one of the most-watched documentaries in Netflix history.
